At Emmbrook Junior School we are:

We teach the children about the qualities they need to have to live these core values.
- Kind – To show that we are kind, we help others, use good manners, show empathy and are caring towards each other.
- Inclusive – To show that we are inclusive, we are respectful towards others and tolerant of their beliefs and opinions.
- Courageous – To show that we are courageous, we demonstrate qualities like perseverance, honesty, sharing ideas, standing up for ourselves or others and learning from mistakes.
- Inquisitive – To show that we are inquisitive, we ask ‘why?’, ‘what if…?’and ‘how?’ questions about our learning; we demonstrate curiosity; we find out about other people and are motivated to do research or further reading.
- Adaptable – To show that we are adaptable, we demonstrate independence, collaboration, are able to compromise and willing to try something new.
The Department for Education (DfE) have recently reinforced the need to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
It has published guidance on promoting these British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.
Emmbrook Junior School will, in an age appropriate manner, promote British Values to:
- enable pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence;
- enable pupils to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England;
- encourage pupils to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely;
- further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling pupils to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures;
- encourage respect for other people;
- encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
- develop an understanding of the importance of identifying and combating discrimination.
